Where your child feels
at home from day one.

IC Academy sits directly opposite Pui Ching Primary School — the art studio Ho Man Tin parents recommend by word of mouth. We don't grade performances. We observe children. Art here is the starting point for confidence, not another source of pressure.

The question most parents ask isn't "how much does it cost?" — it's: "Will my child actually be okay on the first day?" This page was written for exactly that concern.

Why Ho Man Tin parents choose IC Academy

Opposite Pui Ching — the simplest school run in the area

IC Academy is located directly opposite Pui Ching Primary School, making it the most convenient children's art centre in Ho Man Tin. After school, it's a one-minute walk — no shuttle bus to wait for, no separate pickup arrangement needed. For parents managing multiple children and tight schedules, this matters enormously.

Many families from District 34 schools — including La Salle Primary and Maryknoll Convent School — also choose IC Academy precisely because of its central location, making shared pickup arrangements straightforward between families.

This isn't a tutoring centre — we build confidence through art, not grades

Most extracurricular programmes in Hong Kong are still outcome-driven: graded exams, competition rankings, end-of-year showcases. IC Academy is built on a different premise. Our core conviction is that children create most freely when they feel safe — and that confidence, once established, accelerates every other kind of learning.

This doesn't mean we ignore technique. Quite the opposite: when a child has the confidence to experiment, their development in observation, colour sense, and composition typically outpaces what's possible in a conventional teaching environment.

Three age groups, three distinct approaches

Our programmes are structured around developmental stages in children's psychology — not just age brackets. The goal at each stage is different, and so is our approach.

Sensory exploration and emotional grounding

For young children, art is fundamentally about integrating touch and sight. Our early years programme uses drawing and mixed media to help children build emotional stability and develop a genuine sense of "I can do this."

Stress relief, socialisation, and self-expression

With academic pressure mounting, the art studio becomes the one place each week where there are no right answers. We give particular attention to newly arrived students and those transferring schools who need time and space to settle.

Portfolio development and secondary placement

For students considering DSA pathways or international art programmes, we offer structured training in drawing, colour theory, and portfolio curation — helping young artists build a compelling visual arts record.

The trial class: what we observe in 45 minutes

A trial is not an audition — it's a two-way introduction

Many parents worry the trial class is an assessment — that their child might be turned away for not being "good enough." The reality is completely different. IC Academy's trial class is an opportunity for our teachers to observe how a child naturally responds to the studio environment, while your child gets to experience the atmosphere and pace of our sessions. The decision to continue is entirely yours, not ours.

During the trial, children work through a short creative project with a teacher guiding from the side — no scoring, no written feedback, no pressure. Parents are welcome to stay and observe the full session.

The four dimensions our teachers observe
1
Sustained attention

How long can the child stay engaged with a creative task? This directly informs which class format suits them best.

2
Response to materials

How does the child react to different media — paint, crayons, clay? Tactile preferences reveal a great deal about how they learn.

3
Emotional expression style

Does the child use colour and shape to convey feeling? This helps us plan a personalised direction for the first few months.

4
Social interaction patterns

In a small group, does the child engage actively or need more time to observe first? We adjust our pacing and prompting accordingly.

After the session, your teacher will spend about 10 minutes sharing observations and suggesting the most suitable class group. Read more about the full trial class process.

IC Academy vs a typical interest class: what's different?

What parents say

My daughter was terrified of new environments — I sat in the corner for nearly the entire first class. By the third session she ran in and found her seat without even looking back at me. The teachers clearly know how to help children relax.
Pui Ching Primary parent · daughter, age 5
My son relocated from Singapore and the adjustment was really tough for him. Art class became the highlight of his week — his teacher mentioned he loves helping classmates, and he's gradually made friends at school too.
Newly arrived family · son, age 8
In the months leading up to the HKAT, my son's mood deteriorated and his sleep suffered. Art class became his one weekly release valve. No pressure, no judgment — and it genuinely helped him stay emotionally steady through the whole period.
P5 parent · District 34 school
The portfolio programme helped my daughter secure a place at her first-choice secondary school. Beyond technique, the teacher helped her shape her own creative story — so the panel saw a real person, not just a stack of polished drawings.
Maryknoll Convent parent · daughter, age 11
"I genuinely didn't expect my child to ask to come back after the third class — we'd tried three other activities before this, and every single time I had to bribe him to go. IC Academy is different. He told me it's the one place where 'getting it wrong doesn't matter.'"

Our educational commitment

Why we don't run performance showcases

Many studios hold annual student exhibitions — and we understand the appeal. But when a showcase is framed around "whose work is best," children start creating for an audience rather than for themselves. At IC Academy, we make a deliberate choice not to operate this way.

The studio is a space for each child to be in dialogue with their own creativity. We celebrate individual progress, not comparative rankings. A child who makes their first bold brushstroke at age four deserves exactly the same recognition as one who wins an international award at fourteen.

The developmental logic behind our curriculum

IC Academy's programme structure is informed by four recognised stages of children's artistic and psychological development: the Exploration stage, the Naming stage, the Narrative stage, and the Self-Expression stage. Every child arrives at a different point. Our role is to accurately identify where they are and to select the right materials and prompts to help them move forward — naturally, and at their own pace.

"An art class should be the most relaxing hour of a child's week — not another place where they have to 'hand in work.'"

IC Academy's founder believes creativity grows from a sense of safety. Every decision in our programme design — class size, how teachers give feedback, how we structure free exploration versus guided work — points toward the same goal: making sure each child feels seen and accepted.

How to enrol: three steps, no complicated process

1
Book a trial class

Contact us via the website form or WhatsApp with your child's age and a preferred date. We'll confirm within 24 hours. The trial is completely free — no deposit required.

2
The trial session

The trial runs for approximately 45 minutes. Parents can choose to observe from the side or wait in our reception area. Afterwards, the teacher will take about 10 minutes to share observations and suggest a suitable class placement.

3
Enrolment and class matching

If you'd like to proceed, we'll match your child to the most suitable class group based on trial observations — considering time slot, peer age range, and learning direction. Monthly scheduling keeps things flexible.

FAQs — the 6 questions parents ask most

My child has never done art before — is that fine?

Absolutely. IC Academy welcomes complete beginners, and our curriculum is designed to start from basic sensory exploration. More importantly, we don't filter students by skill level — what we care about is a child's willingness to engage and what they need emotionally from the experience.

Can my child make up a class if they miss a session?

Yes. We have a flexible catch-up policy, though specific arrangements vary by class group — we recommend confirming the details at enrolment. We understand how much Hong Kong families juggle, and we try to accommodate wherever possible.

Do we need to bring our own art supplies?

No. All materials — paints, pastels, clay, paper, and tools — are provided by IC Academy and included in the course fee. Your child just needs to show up.

How long does it usually take for a child to settle in?

For most children, the adjustment period is between 2 and 4 sessions. Our teachers are experienced at building trust gradually with children who are new to group settings. During the first two classes, parents are welcome to stay nearby to help their child feel secure.

Is there anything specifically designed for children preparing for HKAT?

Yes. For P5 and P6 students facing HKAT pressure, we offer a programme focus on emotional regulation — using art as a weekly psychological reset rather than adding to academic load. A number of District 34 school families choose IC Academy specifically for this reason.

How many students are in each class?

Each class has a maximum of 8 students, and some small group sessions run with as few as 4–6. Small-class teaching is a non-negotiable principle for us — it's the most visible difference between IC Academy and large-scale franchise activity centres.
